BRANDS > CHRISTOPHER KANE
Christopher Kane appears to be the up and coming star in British fashion design. Born in 1982 in Scotland, he is now very much based in London. Not surprisingly, the young Kane graduated from the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. It seems that the vast majority of creative minds, contemporary artists and designers that the Western world (and not only) has been applauding for at least the past fifty years, has received their education here.
Christopher Kane had not even finished college when he started collaborating with Russel Sage and Giles Deacon. In 2005 he won the Lancôme Colour Award and Donatella Versace, after noticing Kane's work, approached him about a collaboration with her fashion house and the Atelier couture collection for the very next year, as well as a being a shoe and accessory consultant.
2006 was, in fact, a very important year in Christopher Kane's personal history: in addition to graduating, he won the Harrods Design Award, he started a permanent collaboration with Donatella Versace and, most importantly, he founded his own brand with his sister Tammy. It was the year of his most ostentatious collection, distinguished by its super-short bandage dresses and neon shades.
Over the following years, he was showered with awards and enthusiastic reviews, for his shimmering and innovative collections, as well as collaborations (which include Topshop, Manolo Blanhik, Swarovski). 51% of the Christopher Kane brand was taken by Kering in 2013 with the aim of making the name a global luxury brand with its own single-brand boutiques and well as lines and brand extensions.
The Christopher Kane style is not immediately recognisable since he has the ability to re-invent himself with each new collection. It is possible to discern, however, a recurring modus operandi: the audacious re-interpretation of dresses and classic shapes with incredible designs that are strikingly creative and unexpected. His creations have now become the must-haves for the season, every season, and his collections start trends that are immediately adopted by other established brands.
